|October 2018: NADINE: Power-Plant-Scale Energy Storage|
On the way towards a CO2-neutral energy system, storage of large amounts of energy still is an unsolved problem. In the future, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Stuttgart University plan to jointly develop appropriate energy storage systems. For this purpose, the research institutions have now agreed on the establishment of a research infrastructure, the National Demonstrator for Isentropic Energy Storage (NADINE). |October 2018: Next-Generation Batteries for E-mobility and Stationary Storage Systems|
Big storage capacities, short charging times, and no burnable liquid electrolytes – the solid-state battery is to enable safe electric mobility with large ranges in the future. Now 14 scientific institutions including the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have formed the “FestBatt” competence cluster to work together on this next battery generation. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funds research and development with EUR 16 million. |October 2018: International Workshop on Carnot Batteries in Stuttgart|
Prof. André Thess (DLR) and Prof. Thomas Wetzel (KIT) jointly organised an International Workshop on Carnot Batteries together with University Stuttgart on October 9-10 in Stuttgart. The organisers successfully brought together international experts in the field of thermal energy storage in order to access an exchange on the state-of-the-art of research and demonstration of Carnot Batteries with the aim of establishing an international visible platform for Carnot Batteries. among them Physics Nobel Prize winner Robert Laughlin of Stanford University. After the Greeting Words of the Prof. Ertl (University of Stuttgart) and Prof. Knebel (KIT, see picture), Prof. Laughlin introduced to the subject with an engaged and charming Keynote lecture “Heat is the Answer”. Prof. Thess presented the opportunities and challenges of the planned joint construction of the research facility NADINE (National Demonstrator for Isentropic Energy Storage). |October 2018: National Demonstrator for Isentropic Energy Storage (NADINE) - Memorandum of Understanding signed|
DLR, the University of Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are planning the joint construction of the research facility NADINE (National Demonstrator for Isentropic Energy Storage). In a sustainable energy system, energy storage systems are of vital importance for the integration of renewable energies. However, there has been a lack of location-independent and cost-effective storage on a power plant scale. The German Aerospace Center (DLR), the University of Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) intend to jointly build the NADINE research facility. A first design project phase has been supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and the Ministry of Economics, Labour and Housing of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
For this joint activity the three institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 8 October 2018 in Stuttgart (see picture) in a festive frame program. Physics Nobel Prize winner Robert Laughlin of Stanford University, who initiated the MALTA storage project from Google X, gave an evening lecture entitled "Can Heat Save Us?". |September 2018: Disorder Can Stabilize Batteries|
Novel materials can considerably improve storage capacity and cycling stability of rechargeable batteries. Among these materials are high-entropy oxides (HEO), whose stability results from a disordered distribution of the elements. With HEO, electrochemical properties can be tailored, as was found by scientists of the team of nanotechnology expert Horst Hahn at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Inexpensive production of synthetic fuels from renewable energy sources is an important element of the energy transition. Production of synthetic gasoline, kerosene, diesel or natural gas, however, requires very large facilities. Ineratec, a spinoff of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), has managed to shrink chemical reactors down to a compact format that fits into a ship container and can be used at any location. Electrochemical energy storage is a key technology of the 21st century. Now, the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm & Karlsruhe (CELEST), one of the most ambitious research platforms in this area worldwide, has started operation. It combines application-oriented basic research with close-to-practice development and innovative production technologies. |July 2018: Research Initiative on Regenerative Fuels|
CO2 emissions from fossil fuel-based passenger and freight transport largely contribute to climate change. Synthetic fuels – so called reFuels – may also be produced from non-fossil carbon sources, such as biogenic residues, in combination with the direct conversion of CO2 and renewable hydrogen and may help protect global climate. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) now plans to comprehensively study the opportunities associated with these fuels for society, industry, and the environment in cooperation with partners from automotive industry, automotive supply industry, and mineral oil industry and with the support of the Baden-Württemberg State Government. |July 2018: KIT participating in European FET Flagship project – 3 projects passed 1st stage –|
The European Commission set up a call for so called FET Flagships. “Flagships are visionary, science-driven, large-scale research initiatives addressing grand Scientific and Technological (S&T) challenges designed to run for ten years. They are long-term initiatives bringing together excellent research teams across various disciplines, sharing a unifying goal and an ambitious research roadmap on how to achieve it.” (for more details on Flagships see here)
KIT participated in several proposal within the first stage of the flagship proposal process. In the field of energy research, three applications with KIT participation including several scientists of the SCI program have passed successfully the first stage: CLEAN ENERGY, which is coordinated by KIT, Prof. Bernhard Holzapfel (ITEP) strongly supported by the EERA secretariat, Dr. Holger Ihssen, and two further energy flagships, which are "Battery 2030+" and "SUNRISE".
The current work programme 2018 to 2020 includes a call for proposals for the funding of a maximum of six pilot measures of one million euros each in preparation for these FET flagships. The task of the projects is to develop a coherent vision and a long-term implementation plan for a future flagship within a project duration of approximately one year and to secure broad support of the scientific community for this vision.
The procedure consisted of two stages. Results of the second stage are expected on November 29, 2018. Proposals can be submitted on three topics: ICT and Connected Society;Health and the Life Sciences and Energy, Environment and Climate change.
|July 2018: CELEST Kick-off meeting at HIU|
The Kick-off meeting of CELEST and the first general assembly of its members took place at the HIU, Ulm. The CELEST members elected the spokespersons of the three research areas, actively discussed joint projects and decided on future activities and strategies for the research platform. The CELEST steering committee nominated Prof. Maximilian Fichtner as director of CELEST and Prof. Helmut Ehrenberg as deputy director of the center. The meeting laid a strong foundation for fruitful collaboration and impressively illustrated the broad range of scientific competences gathered among the CELEST members, paving the way for new joint endeavors in electrochemical energy storage.
|July 2018: Renewable Fuel from the Sewage Treatment Plant|
INERATEC, a spinoff of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and the Spanish company GAS NATURAL FENOSA are presently making an important step towards closing the carbon dioxide cycle. In Sabadell, Catalonia, they built a plant that produces synthetic natural gas from climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2) and renewable hydrogen. The process is based on the production of hydrogen by electrolysis and its reaction with CO2 from biogenic sources, e.g. sewage sludge.Press Release 82/2018
|July 2018: New Superconductor Technology for the Transmission Grid|
The German energy transition makes it necessary to extend the transmission grid. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), together with the grid operator TenneT, now studies the use of superconductor technology as an alternative to conventional power cables for short grid sections within the framework of the ENSURE Kopernikus Project. The superconductor cables designed by KIT for this purpose are efficient and powerful. After successful testing, they might allow for a more compact construction of power transmission lines in the three-phase grid.Press Release 77/2018

|July 2018: EERA 10-year Anniversary Conference, 26-27 June, 2018 in Brussels|
On the occasion of its 10th anniversary the European Energy Research
Alliance (EERA) organized a high level policy conference addressing key
issues with an impact on the present and the future of the energy research
and innovation in Europe. In six sessions, each introduced by a key lecture
followed by round table discussion with selected representatives of the
European Commission, EERA Joint Programmes, research and industry. The
topics of the sessions included
I) Research and Innovation at the core of the Energy Union,
II) Stakeholder collaboration for EU Energy Transition,
III) EERA catalysing European alignment driving bottom-up alignment,
fostering top-down convergence,
IV) Megatrends in energy transition,
V) The systemic nature of energy transition and
VI) Visions for a sustainable energy future.
In Session V, the coordinators of the EERA Joint Programmes on Energy
(SC) discussed systemic interactions across technologies and how they
interpin the overarching grand societal challenges, notably in the context
of Horizon Europe. Edel Sheriden (SINTEF) represented the JP ES on behalf of
the coordinator (KIT) and emphasized the relevance and opportunities of
materials and intellectual property resources within Europe in order to
fostering research , development and innovation for the energy transition.
|June 2018: Two awards for the KIT at the ACM e-Energy 2018|
At the 9th ACM International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy 2018), which took place in Karlsruhe from 12 to 15 June 2018 and dealt with topics in the field of energy informatics, two of the four awards went to scientists at the KIT:
The Audience Award Best Poster went to Alexander Murray, Timm Faulwasser and Veit Hagenmeyer from the KIT‐institute IAI with the poster "Assessment of a Multi‐Agent Mixed‐Integer Optimization Algorithm for Battery Scheduling".
The Audience Award Best Paper went to Lukas Barth, Veit Hagenmeyer, Nicole Ludwig and Dorothea Wagner from the KIT‐institutes IAI and ITI with the paper "How Much Demand Side Flexibility Do We Need? Analyzing where to Exploit Flexibility in Industrial Processes".

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Ulm University (UUlm) and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) strengthen their collaboration in the area of Electrochemical Energy Storage. Founded on Jan 1, 2018, the Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Ulm-Karlsruhe (CELEST) plans, prepares and organizes new joint endeavors in research, teaching, development and technology transfer. CELEST shall act as a platform to improve communication and to co-ordinate and further develop joint activities with other universities and research institutions as well as the industry, at home and abroad. Since 2008, the KIT Energy Center has combined basic and applied research in natural, economic and social sciences, as well as in humanities and the legal field into a holistic approach to the entire energy cycle. The bi-annual EERA JP Energy Storage meeting was scheduled from Thursday 3 May to Friday 4 May at the premises of DIFFER in Eindhoven (The Netherlands). While the first day was dedicated to administrative issues, the second day gave the opportunity to have deep scientific discussions in each topic.

The MRS Spring Meeting was held in Phoenix Arizona from the 2-6. April 2018. With a special symposium session on Superconductivity organized by KIT senior scientists, the topic of superconductivity applications amongst energy materials and technologies were well represented at the conference. |May 2018: Live and Precise Recording of Grid Voltage and Load Currents|
Researchers of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have developed a novel monitoring and analysis tool for electrical power grids: The EDR – Electrical Data Recorder continuously scans grid voltage and load currents with high precision and high resolution. While power generation from renewable sources by decentralized producers is increasing, the EDR will provide deeper insight into real systems processes in the future. |April 2018: 4th FASTGRID Project Meeting at THEVA, Munich|
The 4th Technical Meeting for the Horizon 2020 EU Project FASTGRID, jointly managed by CNRS, France and KIT, Germany was hosted at THEVA Dünneschichttechnik GmbH in Munich Germany on the 17-18.April 2018. The two day workshop which included parallel sessions on material development and device research focussed on application of new generation High Tc superconducting tapes and promising new sapphire substrates for developing MV and HV SFCL for power grids. This high TRL project has already identified five innovations and two patents that are expected out of the research performed within the framework of FASTGRID. The next face to face meeting of the project members is planned for the 22-23. Nov 2018.
|April 2018: SmILES 6th Technical Workshop|
The 6th Technical Workshop for the SmILES project, funded in the framework of EU Horizon 2020 funding programme, took place in Copenhagen from the 23-25.04.2018. The workshop focussed on establishing best practices for modelling and simulation of hybrid multi energy smart grids and storage systems. The workshop attracted 18 scientists from 5 countries, with multipledisciplinary expertise in the fields of renewables and multi energy systems with the combined goal of reaching a european consensus on best practices for simulating energy networks in Europe and integrating storage.
The Project will undergo its first review after 18 months since the begin in July 2018 in Brussels.
|April 2018: Lecture Series on Energy Technology|
This course is intended as a supplementary offer for doctoral candidates in energy technologies in order to inform about future energy systems in general, including primarily technologies outside the particular topic of the different doctorates. Principal investigators of different KIT departments will introduce into several major research topics of the KIT Energy Center, thereby providing an overview of the complex energy research field of KIT. The subjects of this course range from nuclear fusion and fission, renewable energies, energy efficiency, fuels and energy storage as well as electric power grids to the economics of energy markets. The learning goal is to discover and understand each own´s particular doctorate thesis as a component within a greater complex system.

|April 2018: Redox Flow Battery: Storage System for the Energy Transition|
KIT Researchers Expect Breakthrough of Flow Technology and Present an Automatic Battery Management System. The redox flow battery might be a key component in the future power grids: It can be scaled as desired, recycled, and it ensures stable energy storage. Moreover, no scarce resources are needed for its production. So far, however, adaptation of the batteries to each application scenario has been required. |April 2018: New Helmholtz Young Investigator Group on Future Energy System Design|
From 1st April 2018 Dr. Tom Brown will lead a new Helmholtz Young Investigator Group at the Institute of Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI) with the topic “New Methodologies to Master Complexity in Energy System Optimisations”. His group will focus on future pathways for the energy system that reduce carbon dioxide emissions not just in electricity generation, but also in other energy-consuming sectors such as transport, heating and industry. While decarbonising these sectors may lead to much higher electricity demand and therefore stress on grid infrastructure, it also offers flexibility in the form of demand-side management and new, cheap storage options. Modelling these different interdependencies while maintaining model detail is an extreme computational challenge. Dr Brown’s group will develop new methodologies to tackle this complexity and therefore provide the best possible policy guidance for the energy transition. Dr. Brown comes to KIT from the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, where he led research to investigate the grid integration of renewable energy.
|March 2018:Cheaper, safer, further? - Perspectives in the electromobility|
The transition to renewable energy challenges battery researchers to develop suitable energy storage technologies. Lithium-ion batteries are currently the most widely used battery technology for various applications, including electric vehicles. For their establishment, however, further improvements are necessary regarding their safety, performance and charging times.
Within a perspective assessment, representatives of the four leading national economies – USA, China, Japan and Germany - Perspectives of automotive battery R&D in China, Germany, Japan, and the USA address these issues, highlight the present state-of-the-art and provide and overview of the current and future developments with a particular focus on the funding programs of these four countries.
The release is the result of the annual International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automobile Applications (ABAA), which took place in October last year, and has the aim to foster the exchange between industry and research institutions.
|March 2018: Living Lab Energy Campus officially started|
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions drastically, increasing energy efficiency as quickly as possible, and implementing the switch to renewable energies - these are the goals of the energy transition. At the same time, it is important to keep the electricity price affordable for business and consumers. The project "Living Lab Energy Campus" (LLEC) of the Forschungszentrum Jülich wants to find solutions to these ambitious tasks, to which State Secretary of Research Thomas Rachel, NRW State Secretary Annette Storsberg and representatives of the Federal Ministry of Economics today launched. With the LLEC, the Jülich research campus is to become a real laboratory for the energy transition, in which the latest scientific findings will be tested for their effectiveness and suitability for everyday use. |March 2018: International Workshop on “Dynamics in Power-to-X-Systems” - Finnish scientists visit KIT|
Scientists from Finland visited the KIT, Campus North for a 2nd bilateral workshop „Energy Lab 2.0 meets Neocarbon Energy“ this time focusing on “Dynamics in Power-to-X-Systems” on March, 26-28, 2018.
About 30 researchers from VTT, LUT, DLR, FZJ and KIT met at KIT, Campus North for exchange of their knowledge and present activities on different power-to-x-systems, including electrolysis, methanation, synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons, and power-to-heat from modeling and simulation up to application, from technology to grid integration, which were presented in 18 talks and additional posters. Potential cooperation topics have been defined, e.g. economic integration of power- to-x systems into the grid, dynamic simulation of power-to-x process chains, system integration of power-to-x technologies in buildings, integration of microwave-sustained plasma splitting of CO2 with gas separation, as well as intelligent design and control of power-to-x systems.
The workshop was jointly organized by Topic 3 Synthetic Hydrocarbons, Prof. Roland Dittmeyer, and Topic 6 Superconductivity, Networks and System Integration, Dr. Jörn Geisbüsch in close cooperation with the partners of VTT and LUT. It is a follow-up workshop to the first workshop held in February 2017 in Finland.
|March 2018: Scenario 2050: Lithium and Cobalt might not suffice|
Lithium and cobalt are fundamental components of present lithium-ion batteries. Analysis by researchers at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) shows that the availability of both elements could become seriously critical. Cobalt-free battery technologies, including post-lithium technologies based on non-critical elements such as sodium, but also magnesium, zinc, calcium and aluminium, represent possibilities to decrease the dependency and avoid the criticality of lithium and Co. supplies in the long term. |March 2018: "Competence E" changed to "Battery Technical Center"|
Since 01.01.2018 the former project „Competence E“ has been transferred to the “Battery Technical Center” of KIT. The research and development of the participating institutes Institut für Angewandte Materialien - Energiespeichersysteme (IAM-ESS), Elektrotechnisches Institut (ETI) as well as Institut für Produktionstechnik (wbk) are now carried out in the scope of the “Battery Technical Center”.
The KIT's competencies along the value chain will be integrated and an open technology platform for future electrical energy storage will be established in the Battery Technology Center. The focus here is on the development and production of new materials and cells as well as the development of battery systems through to integration into an overall system. At the same time, new production processes for the cost-effective manufacture of these batteries are being developed and prototypically presented.

In the framework of EERA Joint Programme Energy Storage, the management of SCI program has carried out an study on mission-oriented R&I on energy storage for the European Commission. The study on mission-oriented R&I on energy storage is done for policy analysis purposes by DG Research and Innovation having in view the preparations for the future research and innovation framework programme (FP9). The overall aim of the study is to increase understanding on how a technology-driven mission, in this case concerning energy storage, can be designed and how such a mission in the field of energy storage would look like.Further Information
|February 2018: Montaha Anjass awarded the Mileva Einstein Marić Prize 2017|
Last Friday, February 2, Montaha Anjass was officially awarded the Mileva Einstein Marić Prize 2017 by the University of Ulm as part of dies academicus 2018.
It addresses the reconciliation of family and academic career: the University of Ulm honors women who stand out through their scientific work, help to shape the university as a scientific institution and manage their careers with their family responsibilities arrange at the same time.
After completing her bachelor's degree at Birzeit University and performing as a teaching assistant, the Palestinian native emigrated to Ulm in 2013. As part of her degree (M. Sc Advanced Materials), she began working at the HIU in 2015 as a research assistant in the Materials I research group.
Meanwhile, she is working in a joint PhD position at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, the Institute of Electrochemistry and the HIU.
|February 2018: Research at HIU strengthens zinc as an alternative anode material over graphite|
A research team led by Dr. Alberto Varzi and Prof. Dr. Stefano Passerini strengthens, with his recently published research the importance of Zinc as an alternative anode material.
Zinc is becoming increasingly important for battery research. The reasons for this are its large natural abundance and, especially, its potentially larger volumetric energy density compared to graphite. So far though, no satisfactory cycling performance could be achieved with pure Zn anodes.
In this work, which is the result of a collaboration with an Italian team of scientists led by Dr. Sandro Cattarin (former Alexander von Humboldt research fellow, ICMATE-CNR, Padua), inexpensive and environmentally friendly electrodeposition in aqueous solution is used to synthesize Zn-rich porous Copper-Zinc alloys. These novel anodes enable more than 500 cycles, characterized by exceptional rate capability and increased capacity retention. In addition, they have unusually high lithium storage ability at low temperatures. These results are of great interest for more efficient, safer, as well as faster charging of Li-battery operated vehicles in cold regions.

|February 2018: 661. Heraeus Seminar on Nonlinear Dynamics, Optimization and Control of Distributed Energy Systems|
In late January 2018, young researchers and renown international speakers gathered in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany, to discuss research trends on "Nonlinear Dynamics, Optimization and Control of Distributed Energy Systems" during the 661. Heraeus Seminar funded by the Wilhelm-und-Else Heraeus Stiftung. Besides leading experts form academia and research institutions, the list of invited speakers included representatives from major industrial companies such as ABB AG and Siemens AG as well as key experts from the German transmission and distribution system operators TransnetBW GmbH and Westnetz GmbH. Young scientists enjoyed their opportunity to hold a short talk or present their work at the poster sessions. The stimulating and contemplative atmosphere of the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef fostered inspiring scientific discussion among the participating Phd students, young postdocs and the speakers.
